Decodable Passages & Blending Lines
Help your students practice decoding and build fluency with these decodable passages and blending lines. We all know that building fluency is critical when it comes to building comprehension. Students need lots of practice in the area of decoding to become fluent. The Science of Reading is clear: Instruction should be explicit and systematic and students should have time at the application level.
I love using these blending lines (adopted from Wiley Blevins) to serve as a warm-up prior to reading the passage. Each blending line set aligns with a decodable passage. Students practice reading words they will see in the decodable. These include known words, words that focus on the current phonics skill, known high-frequency words, and phrases from the passage. Each warm-up also includes vocabulary instruction for the passage.
Then students can easily move into the decodable with the support they need.
