Did you know that our brains are not actually wired to store words as whole units? Yep, it’s true. It is not a visual process. Students are often trained to learn this way, which can often cause issues for those of us following the research.
One way to help PROMOTE orthographic mapping and REVERSE guessing is to have students practice decoding words and then match that word to meaning.
For example: When you read the word dog, what image comes to your mind? Probably a cute furry dog. Right? Guess what? You made meaning from that word.
