Write the Room Phonics Practice (fall)

$7.50

Write the room is an oldy but goody! Students love to be able to get up and move, plus… they look so stinking cute with a clipboard. This activity is easy to prep and use!

WHY WE LOVE IT

This Write the Room activity has students movin’ and groovin’ as they work on their letter sounds.  Students (especially the younger ones) love activities that involve movement or getting up from their seats.  Movement helps work different parts of the brain and aids in attention span. If you have students who struggle with sitting all day, this activity is perfect!

Students will practice identifying the beginning and ending sounds of images around the room.  This helps students practice letter sounds and therefore helps improve decoding skills.  For students who are ready for more of a challenge, this activity includes all of the phonics skills you’re looking for – from digraphs to diphthongs!  Students will encode and then decode as students write and then read the words.

HOW TO USE

1.Since you’ll be placing and taping these cards throughout the room, laminating the Write the Room half sheets and the image cards is helpful.  Pass out one student record sheet to each student – the beginning/ending sheet or the phonics sheet.

2.On the student record sheets, indicate the letter sound focus or phonics skill.

3.Tape (or better yet, Velcro) the images inside the circle on the Write the Room half sheets – one image per sheet.  Place them around the room.

4.Students go around the room with their record sheet.  For beginning/ending sounds, they will find an image and write either the beginning or ending sound on the correct number line.  For the phonics skills, students will find an image and spell the image out on their corresponding number line, then read the word in full.
