Halloween Small Group Phonics Activites

$1.50

Add some spooky detail to your phonics lesson!

GHOSTLY VOWELS

How to Use:

Option 1: Vowel Intensive

Give each student a ghost.

Say: “Eyes on me… the sound/syllable is _________”

Then ask students to hold up the vowel they hear and say its name and sound. “a says /a/”

Option 2: CVC WORK

Give each student a ghost.

Say: “Every word has to have a vowel… Can you help me decide what vowel it needs?”

Take turns writing words with the medial sound missing.

Say: “I am trying to write the word /cat/ what sound am I missing?

Allow students to raise their hand to answer and then ask them to place the correct sound in the blank. Then as a group segment and blend the word.

Option 3: Build Fluency

Create an anchor chart (see sample) Ask students to take turns choosing a ghost and reading the words (real/nonsense) as fast as they can. Ask the student to read it and the other students to repeat it.

SPIDERWEBS

Print Segment and Write boards onto card stock and laminate. Grab some manipulatives. My favorites are these mini erasers, google eyes, and of course spiders!

Dictate words for students to spell. As students spell words, ask them to push up one manipulative for each sound they hear in the word.

**REMEMBER: blends get two separate boxes. Digraphs, vowel teams, r-controlled, and diphthongs get one. Silent e goes with the last consonant.

Once students have segmented each sound, it is time for them to write the corresponding letter in each box.

Next, have students read the word.
