Unit 1: The Foundation
Learning to read begins with a strong foundation in phonological awareness and alphabet knowledge. The NRP found that students who struggle to read, often have inadequate phonemic awareness. When provided with systematic and explicit instruction in phonemic awareness in combination with letters and sounds, children's reading and spelling skills improved.

Units 2-4: Explicit and Systematic Phonics
The NRP also concluded that phonics instruction produces significant benefits for children from kindergarten through 6th grade. The greatest of these improvements were seen through systematic phonics instruction.
